Shotgun start for competitions

Postby Steve on Wed Jan 30, 2008 7:47 pm

Just wondered if it would be better to tell pairings what peg to start on.

So the first pairing starts on peg 1, second on peg 2 etc.

This is the same format used at other comps and works very well.

I did think of trying this last season but it would only make sense if the course was shot in sequential order with no jumping between free pegs which would probably slow things down. On a lot of courses not all the pegs are visable like our range and a shotgun start would be a good idea to stop people wasting time wondering around trying to find a free peg.

I have no stong feelings either way but I can't see any real advantage to it unless we get really busy. If enough of you want to try it we can give it a go.

I think it's the starting anywhere and jumping between free pegs that causes little knots at the later stages of the competition.

I still can't see that a shotgun start would be any quicker especially if you get stuck behind a slow shooting pair or one of the unristricted shooters who may have a chair to lug about and depending on where he started would have to carry it from the big range to the small and then back again.
I'll try it out at the next round and see which one everyone prefers.
